It's about half-time for Melbourne Design Week 2017. For those who have just tuned in, the program this year is themed around Design Values and asks us, "What does design value, and how do we value design?"
Upon hearing that, you might think the question simply serves to communicate to us that design matters. But when we start to see the array of answers flooding in from different event organisers, speakers and attendees, it becomes clear that the value of design changes depending on whether we are an individual, business or in the industry.
For businesses, it can raise more questions than it answers:
- What do you need to know about design as a business?
- In your industry, how can design help you prepare for the future?
- What have businesses been able to achieve through innovation in design?
- How can we use design to encourage meaningful relationships with consumers?
There are several events on during Melbourne Design Week where you will be given the space and stimulus to engage with these big ideas. Here's a list of the events you should check out if you're interested in finding the answers.
Starting with our own event (of course), we'll be leading an interactive discussion for designers tomorrow night about the different ways and means we can help businesses succeed in an ever more technological and competitive world.
You'll be encouraged to join in the discussion hosted by Moayad Hamdouna, our Creative Director at Mo Works, where we'll be talking about how design helps businesses stay relevant and build meaningful connections with the community.
Moayad will be joined by guest speaker John Maltby, who specialises in personal branding. John will highlight the importance of strong professional personas, explaining how they can help designers and other professionals when communicating the value of design to businesses.

Speakers from prominent organisations such as the Australian Open, Notel and HCF share stories about the design agencies that changed their businesses. We sense a blood, sweat and tears remembrance of the times these brands pushed themselves to the limit to innovate and get ahead.

Location: Clemenger BBDO Auditorium at NGV International
Tickets: $65 book through AGDA
There's good service and there's bad service. Increasingly we rate services on the user-friendliness and relevance of interface designs, apps and other technological infrastructure and communication tools. Come along to the panel discussion about the evolution of service design and how consumers depend on these indicators of service now and will do into the future.
Speakers will include Janine Pawson of NBN and Kate Vella of City of Melbourne.
Location: RXP Experience Hub in Melbourne
Tickets: FREE book through Academy XI
When an idea is only worth peanuts hand it over to Ben Landau. Ben presents clever workshops and events to make groups participate in artistic methods of creation. In this event he will inspire groups to make innovations, draw them and exchange them for beer and peanuts. It's fast, it's social and it's fun.
Sponsored by Temple Brewing, the event runs in 1 hour length sessions across one evening.
Tickets: FREE through Eventbrite
Good design is good thinking. If you believe design could be something of a turning-point in the life of your brand or business, refresh your mind on the design stories of big brands like Apple, Coca-Cola and Google through Design Week's many business related events. Then find somewhere to sit and flesh out your ideas of how design can be the differentiator for your business.
We expect great moments and brilliant conversations to come alive for the rest of Melbourne Design Week. For more information on the events being held throughout the festival, check out the program.
Melbourne Design Week is a Victorian Government initiative held in collaboration with the National Gallery of Victoria.
